Bromley Town Centre Regeneration
Bromley Town Centre in Kent is undergoing a further phase to its regeneration plan and lighting is a strong feature of the scheme and its concept. The three main areas that are included in this section of development are East Street, High Street and the junction at the south end which joins them both. New paving, architectural features and art form most of the changes along with the vertical structure of large trees and bespoke lighting columns. The lighting columns are unique in that they have been designed with Bromley’s needs in mind and have a road optic combined with options for CCTV and Gobo projection all housed within the post. The columns also have back lighting from LED which provides human height illumination at the rear of the column.
The design has to meet CE2 as a lighting class and this requires high levels of uniformity and lux levels. The opposite arrangement which has been laid out will give a strong visual impression and will help with the identity of the area and creating a community focal point.
The CCTV integration was asked for to keep street clutter to a minimum and to allow discrete coverage rather than large impactful structures. The gobo projection will be used to light key buildings along the routes and to highlight areas where there are special features. Its also possible to use them for festive lighting effects or to generate revenue via sponsorship of an image or projection of corporate information.
The paving has lit slabs to give interest and variety and to lead people through the space and yellow has been used throughout as a strong identifying colour for Bromley as it comes from the Broom plant which is prolific in the area.
The design team on this project are it does for lighting, May Gurney for electrical and as the main contractor and also Studio Egret West who are the Landscape architects. Many different departments in Bromley Council have also been involved and this means the scheme has buy in from all those with an interest which helps with approvals and funding.
